当宾语从句由一般疑问句变来时，其引导词由if 或whether引导，意为“是否”，表示选择。其区别如下：
1、if 和whether引导宾语从句时，一般可以互换，但在下列几种情况下只能用whether，不能用if。
（1）当or not紧随引导词之后时。如：we didn't know whether or not she was ready。我们不知道她是否已经做好准备。
（2）从句做介词宾语时。如：i am interested in whether he joined the army。我对他是否入伍很感兴趣。
2、whether 比if正式，if 多用于口语。
3、if可以引导条件状语从句，意为“如果”“假如”，whether则不可。

5.whether后可接不定式,而if不能.如：Please tell us whether to go or stay here.
6.在有些动词（如discuss）之后,只能用whether,而不用if引导宾语从句.如：We discussed whether we should close the shop.
7.在引导否定概念in宾语从句时,只能用if,而不用whether.如：he asked me if I hadn't finished my work.
if 与whether用法的区别
1. if和whether在宾语从句中，都表“是否”，可换用，if更口语化，whether正式些。当有or not时， 一般用whether，而不用if。
2. if可引起条件状语从句，whether不用于状语从句。
3. whether可引起主语从句，表语从句，if不能用于这两种情况。
4. if在名词性从句中只能引导动词后的宾语，whether可通用。
