I had a busy "to do" list today and was about to get started when my sister called. I talked with her for a short time and could hear my 7-year old niece speaking loudly in the background. I asked to speak with her, both because I love talking to her and because I was hoping I could learn something active from her and give my sister a break.
I listened and talked with her on the phone, giving her as much time as she needed to share her ideas and express herself. The conversation went on for quite a while as I heard about on all the latest, important happenings in her life. She told me all her funny stories. She told me the funniest things that always surprise me and cause me to laugh out loud!
Forty minutes later she finished, saying, "Well, I should probably let you get going." At one point in the conversation, I thought about my "to do" list, but then I turned it back to her. I chose to talk with her and give her my full attention so that she felt important and special. Children are so precious and grow so fast! And we can learn so much from them and the way they see the world. When choosing between my niece and my to-do list, I decided that chores can wait - every time!

We walked a couple of miles yesterday, pushing my little son in the stroller. He got hungry so we decided to stop for a meal for him.
While we were waiting in line, a woman came in. She was very angry and talking about someone who had asked her for money. In her opinion those people needed to get jobs.
We were feeling a little uncomfortable with her and I was wondering what I should say to my kids later, especially my fifteen year old daughter. I always tell her we should help others in trouble.
I knew this was my chance, both to help her change her thinking and to help her feel cared for on her birthday. I asked the clerk for help, telling her I wanted to pay for the lady and asking if she was getting just a meal.
The cashier was surprised! She went over and casually asked. "Will this be a meal?" Then looked at me and said, “You wanted cookies with that?” That was fun!
When the lady went to pay, the cashier said someone had paid for it for her. That's when the woman came to our table and tried to refuse to take the meal! She even said, “I can't take your money, because I didn't help the person who asked me for money for food!"
I just smiled. And l told her that I hoped she had a good time. In the end, she left really seeming to be brighter and more thoughtful about all that had happened.
