Because he was from Shakya, so people called him Shakyamuni, which means a "saint of Shakya". And also he has become an enlightened sage and that's a Buddha, so he had been named Shakyamuni Buddha. The place he gained his enlightenment is now call the Bodhi Field. The pipal tree is now called the Bodhi Tree (the word Bodhi means a complete enlightenment about the truth of Buddhism). Buddhism had been introduced into China. Buddhists worship Shakyamuni's gaining of his enlightenment on the 8th day of the twelfth lunar month and call that day the "Festival of Enlightenment".
